The challenge: Anxiety and stress in young patients

For many children, hospital treatment is an exciting and stressful experience. Strange people in white coats. A clinical room full of unknown things. An environment that is experienced as unpleasant and ‘scary’ by young patients, and therefore also makes the work more difficult for healthcare providers.

At the Canisius-Wilhelmina Hospital (CWZ) they saw this problem every day. Children who came in tense and anxious for treatment. That is why the CWZ decided to transform the old treatment room into a pleasant environment. But how do you create them in a naturally exciting environment?

The innovative solution: A playful world with digital distraction

Distraction is an effective method of reducing pain and anxiety in children during medical procedures. The use of distraction in different ways appears to have a positive effect on children during painful procedures.

CWZ found the answer in an innovative approach. The treatment room has been transformed into a playful space. With fresh, soothing light blue walls with images of fish and coral. But the real innovation is at the ceiling.

AVEX realized a moving LED ceiling above the treatment bed. No boring white ceiling tiles, but a lively screen with moving images. The child lies on the bed during the treatment and looks directly up, exactly where the beautiful video images can be seen. The technology diverts attention from the medical action and takes the child to another world. A world without injections, examinations or other exciting medical matters.

We especially notice that the ceiling immediately attracts the attention of the patients and their parents so that the focus is on that instead of on the medical treatment and that is exactly the intention of the newly furnished treatment room with ceiling projection.

Content that causes distraction

During the treatment, children do not see boring ceiling tiles, but swim among colorful fish through an underwater world or discover animals in the Amazon region. The video footage lasts about 15 minutes and is specially made to captivate children.

The content has been carefully selected. Soothing images of the underwater world have a calming effect. The colorful animals hold the attention.

The result: More comfort and less stress

The impact is immediately noticeable. Children are more relaxed during treatments. The content is distracting, the child is briefly taken into another world, away from the hospital.

The result is an effective solution that is easy to operate by hospital staff. The videos can be started at the touch of a button and immediately create a different atmosphere in the room.

The positive response from both patients and healthcare staff confirms the value of this innovation.
