Image and sound are essential for the core processes of de Rechtspraak

Project

After years of preparation, the new Amsterdam District Court was taken into use in 2021. An authoritative building, located on the Zuidas, with a lot of glass, through which you can see the city from the inside. It radiates transparency, one of the key points in the ambitions of the Judiciary. AVEX provided the audio-visual equipment in the modern digital courtrooms, inquiry rooms and interrogation rooms.

There were many wishes for the new building, but the most important wishes were an authoritative and functional building for the administration of justice. Audiovisual means have become indispensable in the judiciary, partly due to corona they are used daily.

Audiovisual Solutions

The demand for AVEX was very broad. The digitization of all processes makes showing images very essential during a session. Good audio systems are important for speech intelligibility. That is why AVEX has equipped all rooms with presentation screens so that you can always show things from the digital file in the room. Room connections have also been realized so that you can make a connection from several hearing rooms to the room where the hearing takes place. For example, if there is a lot of interest or if the parties have to be separated, one can attend the hearing in several rooms. There are also press connections so that the press can watch from a distance if desired instead of being present in the room.

Focus on usability

Much attention has been paid to the user-friendly operation of all technology in the rooms. Using simple touch panels with pre-programmed selection keys, the secretary can operate all basic functions. Think, for example, of showing images, switching microphones on and off, recording functions and, for example, a veto button, where the chairman switches off all microphones with one button.

During the corona time, construction was delayed and schedules had to be revised several times. Due to good consultation with all parties, it was possible to have the 1st sessions take place on the planned date and to support everyone well in this.

Realized audiovisual solutions

• Audiovisual furnishing of 30 courtrooms, 20 inquiry rooms and various interrogation rooms
• Including NEC presentation screens, audio solutions with Bose speakers, Shure microphones
• Crestron operating systems and video distribution
• Room connections and special press connections for remote attendance at hearings

About the Court of Amsterdam

The Amsterdam Court is the newest building within the Judiciary. The new building has 10 floors and a surface area of 60,200 m2 for offices, courtrooms, conference centre, interrogation rooms, the detention centre, facilities and parking facilities.

The building offers space for approximately 1,000 court employees and 200 employees of chain partners, such as public prosecutors, lawyers, probation officers and interpreters.

Sustainability

During the construction, not only functionality, recognisability and visibility were taken into account, but also sustainability. For example, there are solar panels on the roof, there are charging stations for electric vehicles, heat and cold storage are used and the interior lighting is adjusted to the strength of the daylight. The material used is also sustainable. The court is designed in such a way that the building can easily be adapted to future developments; for example, the layout of courtrooms can easily be changed, so that all parties to the proceedings have a good place to do their work in the court.
